Nick Gegen Is Triumphant In The Spring Classic III Grand Prix Presented By Equ Lifestyle Boutique

April 7, 2019 – San Juan Capistrano, CA – Nick Gegen aboard Arc De Triomphe, owned by Neaulani Farms emerged victorious in Saturday’s $50,000 Spring Classic III Grand Prix Presented by Equ Lifestyle Boutique.

Course Designer Peter Holmes created a technical 1.50m track on The Oaks International Grand Prix Field. Holmes shared his thoughts about the course, “It’s a 1.50m Grand Prix this week, up from a 1.45m. It’s going to require a great deal of precision. Blenheim EquiSports is really trying to set a standard. They want to see that scope; close to the international level. It’s great to see some competitors that are stepping up and bringing some of the best horses to a great competition.

An energetic crowd cheered on twenty horse/rider combinations as they navigated the first round track. Time was not a major factor, however, half the field fell victim to the second or third element of the challenging triple combination.

Cassio Rivetti was the first to go clear and would eventually see both of his horses make it through to the second round. He was joined by Gegen and two other riders, resulting in a five-horse jump off.

The jump-off course proved equally challenging. In the end, only Gegen and Arc De Triumph were able to navigate it fault-free in a time of 47.594 seconds. Cassio Rivetti aboard his second horse, Kaiser Van Het Lambroeck edged out the four-faulters with a time of 42.589, narrowly crossing the wire ahead of Mattias Ekeroth and Dacarlos with a time of 42.629.

April 5, 2019 – San Juan Capistrano, CA – Coming into the handy round in third place, young professional Jamie Sailor moved up to win the $15,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby aboard Hopeful, owned by Astrid Van Leeuwen. Both Horse and rider earned their first derby victories. The pair finished with a two-round total of 370.5 points, while Karli Postel rode Get Rowdy, owned by Teton Farms, LLC, to a second-place finish, scoring a total of 368 points. Nick Haness and Lindsay Schiefelbein’s Verdict finished a close third place, with a final score of 364.5 points.

Watch Jamie’ post-event interview (below).

Dressed up for the affair, The Oaks International Grand Prix Field welcomed twenty hunters over the gorgeous course set by Canada’s Peter Holmes. The two judging panels consisted of Don Stewart and Patrick Rodes as panel one, while Joni Osteen and Chris Wynne made up panel two. Twelve horses advanced to the second round, where open gallops, tight inside turns, and rollbacks combined to show off a hunter’s handy traits.

“I really enjoyed building this course,” Holmes explained. “This is how horses are meant to be shown. Beautiful animals showing off at the gallop and over fences. And showing how nimble the horses are in the handy round. It’s a special treat to be able to use such fantastic equipment here at Blenheim EquiSports.”

After galloping the handy course on her two other mounts, Sailor gave the seven-year-old Hopeful a confident ride, earning them both their first USHJA International Hunter Derby victories. It was the young bay horse’s second Derby of his career, but certainly not his last. Sailor led the victory gallop not only with a big smile but dropped the reins and gave two fist pumps.

Along with earning the tri-color ribbon, Sailor takes home a USHJA Boot Bag and a pair of Roeckl Sports gloves. She also earned fifth and sixth place ribbons on Matador and Quarter Note, respectively.

In between the two rounds of competition, Janie Andrew of Rancho Mirage, CA was awarded the Arthur J. Hawkins Award for Excellence for her decades of support of the show hunter industry. As Vic Carmen announced the credits to her name, she’s owned and shown a long list of top hunters, it was clear she belonged on the list of talented horsemen and horsewomen who have won the award over the last eleven years.

April 4, 2019 – San Juan Capistrano, CA – Shawn Casady aboard Cicomein VDL, owned by HKC Collection LLC, topped the field in today’s $25,000 Markel Insurance Jumper Classic.

Making the victory twice as nice, today’s classic was held concurrently with the $2,500 Blenheim EquiSports U25 Jumper Classic. Twenty-four year old Casady was crowned the winner of both events.

Course designer Peter Holmes of Canada built an inviting 1.45m track on The Oaks International Grand Prix Field, consisting of sixteen jumping efforts, including two combinations. The class of twenty-seven entries saw nine go clear and advance to the jump-off.

The first to jump clean in the second round was Nicole Haunert and Jamaico Drum van de Breepoel, setting the pace with a time of 46.988. Two rides later, Vani Khosla aboard Billy Mexico laid down a fault-free trip in 40.406. Riding second to last in the jump-off, Casady and Cicomein VDL bested the rest with a clean round in just 39.624 seconds.
