- If showing in the Pony Hunters is your passion, then Blenheim EquiSports is the place to be this season! Numerous special events are being offered this year to provide Pony Hunters and their Riders multiple opportunities to earn points in a fun and unique setting. Action kicks off during Blenheim Spring Classic II with the first of four USHJA Pony Hunter Derbies, followed by a three-week pony derby extravaganza in June.
Open to small, medium and large ponies, the first round of each pony hunter derby will start with a Classic Hunter round, followed by a Handy Hunter round. The derby course will not include high options, but handy points will be considered in the base score of the Handy round. At the conclusion the Top 12 ponies will receive awards based on their round in both performances, plus the Winning Owner, Rider, Trainer, Groom of the Best Turned out Pony and the Rider of the Winning Handy Round will also walk home with special recognition.
Modeled after the USHJA International and National Hunter Derby programs, the USHJA Pony Hunter Derby program will enable riders to earn National and Zone Horse of the Year bonus points, as well as year-end series awards.
"With USHJA adding the Pony Hunter Derby to the Derby Program, we are excited to expand from offering one Pony Derby to four this season," said Melissa Brandes, Blenheim EquiSports VP of Marketing. "We look forward to welcoming even more ponies to gallop on Blenheim's beautiful grass!"
As part of Blenheim EquiSports' expanded Awards Program, Pony Derby riders will be eligible to win "derby circuit" awards, sponsored by Makoto Farm
, for finishing as the highest placing small, medium or large pony competitors. These three awards will be given out after the fourth and final USHJA Pony Hunter Derby of the year, presented by Markel Insurance
, during the Blenheim Red, White & Blue Classic.
