In Perfect Harmony, Grady Lyman and Sinatra's Ruhm Earn a CPHA Medal Finals Win; Jayme Ormand and Zilveren Top the Adult CPHA Medal Finals
San Juan Capistrano, CA - Medal Finals season kicked off this week at the Blenheim Summer Classic with the California Professional Horsemen's Association (CPHA) Junior and Amateur Hunt Seat Medal Finals. Judged by John Roper, Tony Sgarlata, and Scott Hofstetter, the three round competition ended with flair in the indoor ring adjacent to the Rancho Mission Viejo Riding Park at San Juan Capistrano.

After two rounds, one on Friday and the second on Saturday afternoon, the top ten-scoring Juniors and Amateurs returned to compete for the top prize on Saturday evening. Jayme Omand of Sacramento aboard Pumpkin Ridge Equestrian Center's Zilveren earned the top call in the Amateur Division and Grady Lyman of Rancho Santa Fe, riding Christy Clarkson's Sinatra's Ruhm, brought home the blue in the Juniors.

Beginning with an entry list of 50, the competitive Junior Division included a strong group of California's best. Joe Lombardo designed a first round track that tested accuracy and adjustability with broken lines, rollback turns and distance challenges. Riding early in the order, Lyman scored a 253 and took the lead. Almost thirty rounds later, Kayla Lott on Elvenstar's Vancouver narrowly bested that score, earning a 253.25. Towards the end of the first round, Nina Vogel and Aquino 9 earned a 251.75 for third.

Notably there was less then four points separating the top five, with Kelsey Fenger sitting fourth at 250.5 and Morgan Dickerson picking up fifth with 250, while less then ten points separated the top ten.

Lyman, Lott and Vogel earned top five scores in Saturday afternoon's second round, while Eve Jobs aboard Curtis received the top Round Two score of 262.5 Just 1.5 points lower, Lyman was second with 261, Lott was third with 249, Emma Marlowe riding Pam Stewart's Citadel was fourth with a score of 247, and Vogel received a score of 243 for fifth. With that second place finish on day two, Lyman moved into the top ten round with the highest combined score of 514.

The Final Round proved to be a worthy test with a twelve obstacle track of twisty turns and challenging distances. Stops, trot steps and missed distances caused lower scores for over half of the returning riders. Marlowe, Vogel, Lott and Lyman rose to the challenge, ultimately earning the top four spots. However with scores of 86, 84, and 87, Lyman achieved a final score of 771 for a landslide victory.

Grady Lyman and Sinatra's Ruhm

As Lyman warmed up under the guidance of Bridgeport Farm as well as some assistance from Karen Healey Stables, they collectively decided to change her plan. "I was going to do all the inside turns and then at the last minute, we decided to stay nice and go around and smooth out everything."

Holding the top position and aware of the challenges, Lyman was trying to keep her cool, but certainly felt the pressure. Crediting her mount, she was grateful for the chance to ride Sinatra's Ruhm. "He poured his heart into it."

Lyman has more medal finals in her future including the CPHA Foundation, PCHA, ASPCA Maclay Regionals, as well as heading East for Harrisburg and hopefully the National Horse Show.

Fourteen combinations competed for the blue in the Amateur Division. Both scoring 234 in the first round, Hadley Boyd riding Louis 228 and Omand on Zilveren took the top two spots on day one, while third went to Belle Calkin on Bellagio with a 224.5.

Jayme Ormand and Zilveren

Clara Plestis and Crescendo were stellar in round two, earning scores in the eighties from all three judges for a total of 252. Once again finishing in a tie, Omand abaord Zilveren and Katie Kramer riding Sierra Swaffar's SS Brando both earned a 243 in Round Two. Staying solid throughout the first two rounds, Omand moved to the Final Round in the top position with a combined score of 477.

With related distances, a skinny line of brown gates and a combination as some of the tests on course, a good number of the competitors managed to answer the questions asked. Earning the highest score of the round, Katie Kramer moved up to second place overall. Omand's consistency paid off once again, placing second in the round. Her final three round of 706.5 was well over ten points higher than Kramer's for the win.

After just over a month and a half together, Omand and Zilveren are a relatively new partnership. Performing well under pressure, they appear to be a good match. "We rode it exactly how we walked it," she says. "He loves to jump and he kind of studies the jump and backs off." Omand will compete in the CPHA Foundation and possibly the NorCal Medal Finals before returning to Texas Christian University in the fall.
