Come Monday Reigns in Friday's USHJA International Hunter Derby
Tara Metzner Earns a Decisive Victory on the Davlyn Farms entry

Del Mar, CA - Thirty-one horse and rider pairs came to play on this beautiful day in Del Mar. After a clean sweep of the Classic and the Handy rounds, it was Tara Metzner and Come Monday (Davlyn Farms, owner) who took home the blue, with Jenny Karazissis and Splendid (Julia Landmann, owner) earning second and John French and Soldier (Elizabeth Gabler, owner) rounding out the top three.

The esteemed judges making up the two panels were Don Stewart and Liz Adler on Panel One, with Bill Ellis and Kim Dorffman making up Panel Two. Joe Lombardo's Classic Round offered four 4'3" high options at fences 2, 4, 5, and 10, which only a handful chose to jump. Interestingly, the white flower decoration at the final fence proved to be quite spooky for several entries, causing refusals and some hard rubs. This wasn't true for Metzner, who came in and laid down a sleek, smooth round, earning scores of 88 and 89 for a first-round total of 177. Tommi Clark and Exemplar (Stephen Borders, owner) finished just behind them with an 87 and 88, plus one high option point, also for a total of 177. Metzner ended up with the winning score from the tie-breaking panel, with Clark in second. Karazissis and Splendid were third, while Nicole Haunert and Ninja placed fourth, both with scores of 171. Haunert was one of the few to take all four high options.

"I've been riding Come Monday since August of 2013," Metzner said after her win. "This is our second Hunter Derby, our first was at the $50,000 Hunter Derby at WEF, where we won the first round. The one at WEF was supposed to go on the grass, but we ended up having to stay in the Grand Hunter Ring on the sand," Metzner said of her experience with Come Monday to date, before going on to describe the mare's diva personality. "And since this horse is such a big mover and so brave, it was so nice to get out on the field. That's where she really excels. Come Monday's definitely opinionated and doesn't like to be fawned over. She just likes to go to the ring, do her job and then go back to her stall and eat her dinner. She knows she's pretty good at her job and just wants to be left alone to do that."

The Handy Round featured a serpentine track from fences 1-3, a journey up the bank ending in a trot jump at the base, a hand gallop to fence 6, and tight rollbacks to the two-stride and an airy gray vertical. Once again, it was Metzner and Come Monday riding to the win, with the judges rewarding their brilliant handiness and efficiency with scores of 90+6 and 90+8 for a second-round total of 196 and a grand total of 373, earning them a decisive victory. Karazissis and Splendid placed second in the Handy with scores of 89+8 and 88+9, which also moved the pair to place second overall. When French piloted Soldier to a third-place Handy Round finish, he jumped up from fifth to third overall.

Alongside the professionals in the top 12 were two amateurs, Tiffany Sullivan and Adrienne Dixon, as well as junior rider Kaitlyn Von Konynenburg.

Stay tuned for an outstanding weekend at the Ranch & Coast Classic, including a Saturday afternoon of show jumping with the $7,500 CashCall Mortgage Futurity beginning at noon and the $60,000 Grand Prix of California, presented by Equ Lifestyle, starting at 3:15pm.
