La Fleur 4 & Menezes Fly for the Grand Prix Win
San Juan Capistrano, CA - It was another picture perfect day for show jumping in Southern California. A small but talented group of competitors attempted Linda Allen's course in the $40,000 Blenheim Summer Classic Grand Prix, sponsored by Equ Lifestyle. Of the six who were clear in the first round, Brazilian Eduardo Menezes led the victory gallop, once again aboard La Fleur 4.

Allen, a well-known course designer and one who champions bringing along young horses, built an inviting track. "It's not particularly big. It meets the specs for the class but it's what we call friendly. It is designed for a horse that is not quite as experienced at this level or a new horse and rider combination. It asks some questions but in a pretty friendly way. I used three doubles instead of a triple because you either have to make the triple too hard for some or too easy for others," Allen explained. "It asks a little bit about the rideability of the horses. It will depend on whether the horses keep their focus and stay careful all the way around. We may have half of them clear if they're good or we may not."

Per Allen's prediction, just about half finished clean in the first round, and only time faults kept two more from joining the jump-off. Alfie and Eduardo Sanchez Navarro were just a hint over the time allowed for one fault and Caspa 7 (Georgy Maskrey-Segesman, owner), with Tasha Visokay aboard, had a clean round over the jumps but got caught by the clock for two time faults.

Galloping in first, Miss CashCall (Gregg DeLong, owner) and Joie Gatlin set the pace in the jump-off, finishing double clean in 46.16, ultimately third place. Cord and Francois Esteves of Brazil collected eight faults for a sixth place finish. The leaderboard changed when Chello Z and Brazilian Josephina Nor-Lantzman took the lead by just .04 seconds over Gatlin in 46.12.

A short-lived lead, as La Fleur 4 flew around the shortened course clean with Brazilian Eduardo Menezes. The pair shaved almost five seconds off the fastest time, stopping the clock in 41.51. Zilox T (Haley Farms, LLC, owner) with Gatlin in the irons also went double clear but couldn't beat the Brazilians, nor her own first time, finishing fourth. Socrates de Midos and Michelle Parker had a great time but also lowered the height of a jump for four faults and fifth place.

Having a particularly hot season, Menezes has not only brought home the top prize in four Blenheim grand prix events since May, he has done so on three different horses.

Welcoming his first child into the world in early July and wrapping up a tremendous winter, spring and summer, Menezes is on his way to Europe to compete and represent his country in Nations Cup competition. "I am doing the Global Champions Tour in Lausanne. The Nations Cup in Arezzo and if everything goes well, I will be doing the Nations Cup Final in Barcelona," Menezes said.

But the young, and successful, La Fleur 4 is staying home. "She is only eight so she will have a break now. But the plan for next year includes goals like the world championships, so I will try to prepare her for that level of competition."
